Four Faces of the Vibrator Design

A SIX-MONTH PROJECT

Research

Qualitative and quantitative researchers where history and design collapse on the involvement of women influence the design of vibrators? Masculinity has overrun the world for centuries, taking a position and designing the objects that belong to women. These feminine objects belong to women, the feminine towel, the bra, the tampon, and the vibrator. In the same way, the historical evolution of the vibrator was investigated in the sample, and in another one, the growth of typologies illustrated the development of typologies.

A survey was conducted, and 57 women participated; they were shown two images of different vibrators, one designed by men and the other by women, to determine which model they preferred. The goal was to get an unbiased opinion from the women. Of the fifty-six women who participated, 65% were between 23 and 27 when asked: "Are you sexually active? when asked: Do you have an active sex life? 74% said yes. The question that surprised me the most surprised me the most was: Have you ever used vibrators? Ten answered: "Yes, I love it," and 41 said: "No, but I would like to", and six answered: "No, I would never do it."

Deliverables

Podcast, presentation, and written paper.

Gloria Toba narrates the transformation of the vibrator throughout history, going through four faces that completely change the meaning and design of the object. Brief research was done on 57 female users to know their opinions about vibrators made by men and women, and the results were surprising. Find out how women appropriate the vibrator and what has been the change in the design.
